Summer in the Riviera Maya: Humidity Control in your Property

Posted in Blog, Real Estate on July 14, 2020 by caro

It’s summertime in the Riviera Maya and that means high temps and high humidity. There are so many pros to living near the ocean, but one con can be the high humidity and the damage it can do to furniture, appliances, and even clothes.

If you own property here, whether it be a condo or a house, there are a few simple steps you’ll want to take, to protect your property and its contents from the humidity during the summer months.

1. Make sure all your ACs are property maintained.
It’s great to schedule a yearly service check, to have the filters cleaned and make sure your mini-split units are running at optimal levels. It’s also important to learn the different features of your air conditioning units, many of the newer units have a “dry” feature, which is a great way to remove the humidity from the room.

2. Good ventilation is key!
Rooms like the bathroom, kitchen, and laundry room are going to get more humid than other areas of your home. Make sure to run the fan in these rooms and that they are properly ventilated.

3. Pay attention to the temps
If you live full time in paradise, you know what time of day is hottest and what time of day you’ll start to feel the heat let up. Use your air conditioning accordingly, shut windows and blinds during the heat of the day to keep your condo cool, and at night, when temps are cooler, open the blinds and windows to get the air circulating.

4. Before closing up your condo, make sure you have a plan for the humidity.
If you don’t live here full time or you are planning an extended trip, make sure you have a plan in place to deal with the humidity. One option is to buy de-humidifying products, you can find these are the supermarket and these are great for keeping your clothes from getting moldy. Another option is to buy a de-humidifier. If you do this, you’ll need to have it drained, either by running a hose to the bathroom or lining up someone to come in and check your home while you’re away. A good property management company, like Moskito, does weekly checks your condo or house, to control the humidity while you’re gone.

These 4 easy steps can help with keeping your condo or house looking great during the humid months.
