Mexican Food: Best Chilaquiles in Playa del Carmen
What can I say about Mexican food that hasn’t already been said?! It is the BEST! Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, the dishes are unique, flavorful, and packed with spice. It’s about more than just tacos here in the Riviera Maya, one of my favorite dishes to enjoy at breakfast, or really anytime of day, is the Mexican dish of chilaquiles.
What are chilaquiles?
Chilaquiles consist of corn tortillas that are cut into quarters, lightly fried, and then covered in a green or red salsa. You can have your chilaquiles topped with eggs, fried or scrambled, chicken, or my personal favorite, both. And finally, this delicious dish is garnished with crema (sour cream), crumbled queso fresco (fresh cheese), raw onions, and avocado slices.
My favorite spots for chilaquiles in Playa del Carmen:
A big favorite of locals and visitors alike, La Cueva del Chango (Cave of the Monkey), located on 38th street between 5th and 1st, has some of the best chilaquiles in town. They offer 7 different salsas to choose from, with varying levels of spice, all extremely flavorful and delicious. Add in a coffee, pastry, and a fresh juice and you have the perfect Mexican breakfast.
Another great spot for chilaquiles is La Ceiba, a restaurant connected to the popular organic market, DAC, located on 30th Avenue and Calle 24. Try the “chayakiles”, made with fresh chaya, a leafy green that is similar to spinach and full of vitamins and is a superfood that is used in so many dishes and smoothies. in the Riviera Maya and the Yucatan. Grab breakfast and then do your grocery shopping for the day.
Check out these two great spots for chilaquiles when you are in Playa del Carmen and let us know what you think. We promise you that this will be your new go-to dish when you’re out for breakfast.
